Children on a Narrow Road in Takasu, Japan

Every afternoon,

when the traffic

starts to work itself up

into a frenzy,

these little ones

go off home from school

on this treacherous little road,

no place for unsure feet.

They walk hand in hand,

inches from infinity,

and these passing,

whirring steel devils.

And yet,

they skip and laugh

at every little thing,

no sense how tenuous

this life.

To be like this,

blissful, meandering,

my cheek to whizzing death.
